چکیده

Although gender is central to contemporary accounts of educational stratification, sexuality has been largely invisible as a population-level axis academic inequality. Taking advantage major recent data expansions, the current study establishes core dimension stratification in United States. First, I analyze lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults’ college completion rates: overall, by race/ethnicity, birth cohort. Then, using new from High School Longitudinal Survey 2009, LGB students’ performance on full range achievement attainment measures. Across analyses, reveal two demographic facts. women’s rising advantages are confined straight women: although lesbian women historically outpaced women, cohorts, face significant disadvantages. Second, boys’ well-documented underperformance obscures one group with remarkably high levels school success: gay boys. Given these facts, propose that marginalization hegemonic norms important—but asymmetric—impacts men’s success. To illustrate this point, apply what call “gender predictive” approach, supervised machine learning methods uncover patterns inequality otherwise obscured binary sex/gender measures typically available population research.
